Rinspeed Splash - Amazing Engineering

Swiss creative studio Rinspeed, have created a true sports car Rinspeed Splash which transforms into a hydrofoil speed boat - the Splash is capable of 80 kmh (approx. 45 knots) on the water and 200 kmh on land

Transformation to a speed boat involves deploying a propeller at the rear, the large rear spoiler rolls under the car becoming the rear hydrofoil, and two hydrofoils integrated into the left and right sides of the splash swing down to form the front hydrofoils.

An environmentally friendly bivalent turbocharged two-cylinder four-valve 750cc engine powers the Splash, delivering maximum power of 140 bhp/103 kW at 7000rpm and peak torque of 150Nm at 3500 rpm.

Naturally Rinspeed has constructed the Splash's interior from waterproof materials

First Time in Human History - Mars is the second moon of earth for a day

Mars is going to be a second moon of earth for a day.

NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN.

The Red Planet (MARS) is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of - 2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. By August 27, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot.

At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

This information has been going around the internet. But it turns out that it was a hoax. So please do forgive me for posting this. For the explanation by NASA please click here.

No Doors. No Screen. No Roof - The Ariel Atom

Simply put, the Atom is pure car--and nothing more. It has no doors, no windshield, no roof, and no body panels of any consequence. Its sole mission is to move itself from place to place at maximum possible speed. It doesn't care if you're comfortable, it doesn't care if you're wet or dry or covered in bees, and it doesn't care if you end every trip wearing most of the landscape you just drove through.

The Ariel Atom is a high performance sports car made by the Ariel Motor Company based in Somerset, England. It is unusual in the respect that the chassis is the body, and therefore lacks a roof, windows and other features commonly found on road cars. It is available with a range of engines; the top of the range being a supercharged Honda Civic Type-R K20 engine and a Supercharged 2.0 Litre 300hp 250 ft/lbs GM Ecotec engine both of which can reach speeds rivaling those of much more expensive automobiles. Although the top speed of approximately 140-150 mph is relatively tame compared to more exotic sports cars, the high power-to-weight ratio (approximately 500 bhp/ton, or 650 bhp/ton supercharged) affords it incredible acceleration and control through corners because there is no large amount of weight to throw it out of the turn.

Specifications
  • 0-60 mph : 3.5 sec. (2.7 sec. Supercharged)
  • Top Speed: 140 mph, 225 km/h (155 mph, 249Km/h Supercharged)
  • Power: 220 bhp (300 bhp Supercharged)
  • Weight: 600 kg (~1,320 lb)
  • Transmission: Honda 6-Speed Close Ratio Manual w/ Reverse
  • Price: Base model - $35,000/ Race package - $92,570

100 MPG hybrid vehicle with 3 wheels

The VentureOne (from Venture Vehicles) is a 3-wheel, tilting, plug-in 2-passenger flex-fuel Hybrid vehicle that will go over 100 miles per gallon with a top speed of over 100 mph in a range of 200 miles.

At the same height and Length of a Mini Cooper (but classified as a motorcycle), the VentureOne is a fully enclosed vehicle that is surrounded by a steel “safety cell” and other safety features typically found only in cars—things like side impact beams, driver airbag, rear bumper and engine shield.

The passenger compartment and the front wheel tilt when cornering; however, the forces are aligned with the vertical axis of the driver’s body, resulting in the driver being pressed into the seat rather than pushed across it.

The vehicles’ propulsion system is of a series hybrid design. The system consists of a small internal combustion engine connected to a 15 – 20 kW generator, two in-wheel 25 kW electric motors, a four gallon fuel tank, and a 3 kWh Li-Ion battery pack. The system is able to take energy normally lost as heat due to braking and return it to the battery, increasing overall system efficiency.

All three models will exceed 100mpg, with speeds of over 100 mph, and breathtaking accelleration – a major breakthrough in the automotive industry.

With gas prices near highs this product can’t come soon enough. Mass production is to start in 2008 and models should start in the 20k range.
